The "VAHLE rail" was invented in 1912 by the engineer, Paul Vahle. For typical traveling wires at this time, the flexibility and expansion of the wire frequently led to problems in forming a contact and to considerable spark generation, but also to breaks in the wire. Paul Vahle drew a copper profiled section onto a T-shaped steel section and thus achieved greater strength and a reliable contact, so that the transmission resistance between the copper conductor and the carbon brush of the current collector was reduced significantly. In this way, stops in operation and a long service life of the power supply were achieved.
Conductor rail systems are a safe source of power for current capacities up to 3000 A for many power loads that are predominantly subjected to rough operation, e.g., traveling cranes, loading bridges, container handling equipment, monorail systems, coking machinery, electric hoists, etc.

VAHLE constantly improves and develops the various conductor rail systems.
In the course of over 90 years of product development, the following systems have been created:

  • VAHLE Powerails with a T-shaped steel profile and drawn copper-head are the proven and fully developed "classic" rail type.
  • Copper-head aluminum rails are especially economical due to their light weight with high conductivity.
  • Copper-head synthetic-material rails are preferably used for applications in corrosive atmospheres and in locations with high humidity.
  • Solid-copper rails are recommended for high current capacities and for use in humid locations.

Special features

  • Variation in temperature and resulting expansion and contraction is compensated by standard expansion joints.
  • Conductor rails can be delivered already bent.
  • Heating systems are available for all conductor rails.
  • Special conductors for up to 3000 A current capacity are availble on request.

Rheintacho rotational speed sensors

These sensors use various magnetic proximity measuring principles to monitor the speeds of machine components in a range between 0 and 30,000 rpm.

The application itself determines the measuring principle used. Rheintacho offers a wide range of standard products for the most varied applications, with suitable measuring systems and electronics, as well as appropriate housings, designs and connections. Stroboscopes

Stroboscopes are versatile instruments for the visualisiation of very fast movements. They are important and necessary tools for the inspection and control of machines and manufacturing lines eg in printing or textile industries.

Stroboscopes could also be used for the non-contact measuring of rotational speed. If the stroboscope flash frequency matches the frequency of movement, the test object appears stationary. It can be observed and its frequency of movement recorded.

Rheintacho digital hand-tachometer

Rheintacho's tried and tested digital hand-tachometer record rotational speeds and run lengths. Some of them use a proximity system by shining a light beam on a reflective mark; others use a contact system with special adapters for different applications.

 

Rheintacho switching devices and converter

This category includes switching devices to protect against excessive or insufficient speed (ROTAS), a frequency – current/voltage transducer and a system for detecting the direction of rotation.

All these systems have been developed for industrial use.
The speed monitor (ROTAS) and the converter have GL approval.
The devices are mounted on a top-hat rail.

 

Electrical indicator systems

Rheintacho electrical indicator systems visualize process factors such as rotational speed, velocity, flow, filling levels and positions. These factors are transferred as normalized voltage or current signals for display.

Rheintacho offers a range of indicators in analog or digital versions, and in various sizes.

The indicators are exceptionally robust and ideally suited for use in harsh, industrial environments. We also take account of ergonomic aspects for the operating staff. Clear displays with a well-structured, high-contrast and clear figures enable them to read the displayed values with ease.

The many different uses of the electrical indicators are shown by applications in experimental set-ups and in process monitoring, test rigs and control systems. Ideally, they are used together with our tacho generators.
The actual location of measurement can be up to several hundred yards from the indicator, for example on ships, where the speeds of the engines are displayed way up on the bridge.

Tacho generators

Rheintacho tacho generators reliably measure the rotational speeds of motors. The rotation is mechanically transferred directly via a shaft to the sender. At the output of the sender there is an electric signal proportional to the rotation. The signal is then normally transferred to a Rheintacho indicator system.

The senders are available with a normalized voltage, current or pulse output, which means that the right model can be chosen for a wide range of indicator and control units. Rheintacho also offers custom solutions adapted for the application.

Because of their sturdy and compact design and their electromechanical measuring procedure, the tacho generators are absoluy suitable for industrial applications and are used in plant construction and mechanical engineering, as well as in power and drive engineering, and above all in shipbuilding.

They can measure the rotational speeds of ships' engines, turbines, rotors, rollers or conveyor belts very reliably, even under the most demanding conditions, because this measuring method needs no external power supply. Even if the on-board supply fails compley, the tacho generator continues to provide accurate readings.

A good example of use over long distances is the measurement of the speed of a ship's engine, which is then displayed way up on the bridge.

If, for reasons of safety, certain rotational speeds must be measured several times and with different methods, Rheintacho tacho generators are a reliable alternative to purely electronic or optical measuring systems.
